I agree, mending is something that everyone needs to know.

It would be awesome to teach her how to mend common clothing mishaps so she doesn't grow up thinking "I need to find someone to do that." Like hemming pants to be shorter; my cousin was posting on Facebook that she needed a tailor to do that, and my thought was, I could totally do that myself.

(Not that I've ever had to do it myself... I'm more likely to need to let a hem out than to need to shorten one.)

Your mom is so awesome! I am in love with table runners these days. Our dining table is small and an odd shaped oval, so placemats will not work, but a table runner looks amazing.

And as a side note, if its square it's a napkin, if it rectangular it's a towel. And one day I really want to make some napkins for the table. I prefer the bigger size of cloth napkins to cover more of my lap, but I'm not a fan of hauling a ton of stuff down to the laundry. Maybe when we finally get to move into a house.

I am new to wordpress & am loving so much about it ... like how I could search for certain types of posts. I loved yours. And, I actually made little catnip toys last weekend. My parents' cat plays with his toys constantly. My sister's elderly cat just lays on top of his. :) Great post, great idea, & very cool that you volunteer your time with Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

I've always been a little sad that you never got to know Grandma Lee. Our family tradition is having the girls spend time in the summer at gramma's house, and she taught me so much. I shouldn't be surprised that you've found a way to carry on the tradition whilst simultaneously turning it on it's head. :)

They both look good! I've always eyed that bag in the one-yard-wonder book, I might need to find some stash fabric for it since my car trash ends up on the back floor board until I clean it up at the end of the week.

And I totally feel you on the needing to finish what you start. I'd always felt that way about sewing because I was such a pain and hassle to set up and take down my sewing area when I made a project that I felt like I couldn't quit until I was done, and would rush to finish.

Now that I have room to keep my machines out, I don't feel like I have to hurry up and finish, and so take a lot more time than I used to to finish things. Which is why I put away a half-finished summer dress last fall, knowing that when I felt like working on it again, it'd be easy enough to pick back up where I left off.
